Falling Skies Episode Guide
Once the aliens have destroyed civilisation, apparently the next priority is deciding who gets the last tin of beans. Falling Skies combines a global war with the practical headaches of keeping a travelling community fed, protected and reasonably convinced that tomorrow is worth reaching.
This guide covers all 52 episodes in their original release order. Each entry provides a short, spoiler-light summary and an editorial observation, while Skully’s Picks mark particularly rewarding episodes rather than a shortcut through the story.
Before you press play: Skipping episodes is not recommended. The series is heavily serialised, and later-season descriptions necessarily disclose some earlier developments, although the largest twists and outcomes have been kept out of the individual entries.
TNT commissioned the fifth season as the final one. The series therefore reaches a definite conclusion, even if the route towards it becomes considerably stranger than the grounded survival drama which began the journey.
Season 1 (2011) – 10 Episodes
The opening season establishes the 2nd Massachusetts, introduces the Skitters, Mechs and harnessed children, and follows Tom Mason’s search for his missing son. Its smaller scale, mobile community and constant shortage of supplies give the invasion a convincing human weight.
Episode 1: Live and Learn
Six months after an alien invasion devastates Earth, history professor Tom Mason serves as second-in-command of a resistance group protecting hundreds of civilians. A supply mission confirms that his captured son Ben is still alive, giving the larger war an immediate and painfully personal objective.
Episode 2: The Armory
A search for weapons brings Tom’s squad into conflict with a gang of human outlaws led by John Pope. The encounter introduces Maggie and demonstrates that the survivors may need to fear opportunistic humans almost as much as the aliens.
Episode 3: Prisoner of War
A surgeon arrives claiming that he can remove the biomechanical harnesses controlling captured children. Tom attempts to reach Ben without placing the other prisoners in greater danger, while the resistance acquires an unusual subject for medical investigation.
Episode 4: Grace
Tom, Pope and a scouting party search an abandoned motorcycle shop for usable transport. Back at the school, Anne tries to communicate with a captive Skitter while Dr Harris prefers a more aggressive approach. The episode begins probing whether the invaders are more complicated than their appearance suggests.
Episode 5: Silent Kill
Skully’s Pick
Hal proposes an infiltration plan to rescue Ben and the other harnessed children from a guarded hospital. Anne must also determine how a Skitter can be killed silently enough for the operation to succeed. It is a tense, purposeful episode that brings the season’s central rescue story to the foreground.
Episode 6: Sanctuary, Part 1
Another militia commander arrives warning that the 2nd Mass is about to be attacked. His offer to move the children to a supposedly safer refuge divides the parents and fighters, because trusting strangers after the apocalypse rarely comes with a helpful customer-review section.
Episode 7: Sanctuary, Part 2
Hal begins questioning the protection offered by the sanctuary and investigates what happened to those who arrived before him. Tom and Weaver try to determine whether the separated children are truly safe. The conclusion turns a promise of security into a sharp examination of collaboration and fear.
Episode 8: What Hides Beneath
Tom and Hal scout the enormous alien structure while Weaver’s increasingly erratic behaviour causes concern. Anne’s examination of a Skitter raises disturbing questions about its origins, and Pope develops ammunition capable of damaging Mechs. Several important pieces of the alien hierarchy finally begin fitting together.
Episode 9: Mutiny
Tom challenges Weaver’s decision to proceed with a dangerous assault despite heavy resistance losses. Their disagreement threatens to divide the 2nd Mass just as preparations for the attack reach a critical stage. The conflict works because both men have defensible reasons for believing the other has become dangerously reckless.
Episode 10: Eight Hours
Skully’s Pick
The fighters launch their assault while the civilian camp faces a separate alien attack. Ben and Scott test an unconventional defence, and Tom makes a desperate attempt to reach Weaver’s stranded force. The finale expands the enemy’s significance and ends with a decision carrying serious consequences for the Mason family.
Season 2 (2012) – 10 Episodes
Season 2 is leaner, darker and more confident. Tom returns from alien captivity under suspicion, Ben’s connection to the Skitters deepens, and the 2nd Mass begins a difficult journey towards reports of a surviving government in Charleston.
Episode 1: Worlds Apart
Tom returns after months aboard an alien ship but remembers little about his escape. Weaver must decide whether his trusted second-in-command remains safe to have among the group, while Pope openly questions Tom’s loyalty. Alien abduction does rather complicate the usual return-to-work interview.
Episode 2: Shall We Gather at the River
The 2nd Mass prepares to cross a damaged bridge as Tom experiences disturbing physical and psychological effects from his captivity. Pope’s suspicions intensify when evidence suggests the aliens may still be using Tom. The river crossing gives the episode a strong sense of movement while keeping the threat uncomfortably close.
Episode 3: Compass
The survivors occupy an airport hangar, but poor health and dwindling supplies make remaining there increasingly difficult. A mysterious visitor brings news of a settlement in Charleston, while Pope’s Berserkers consider removing Tom from the group. Hope arrives, though naturally without directions anyone can completely trust.
Episode 4: Young Bloods
Hal and Ben encounter a group of children surviving without adults and discover that the aliens remain interested in young captives. Weaver follows a separate lead connected to his missing family. The episode contrasts the Mason brothers’ growing independence with children forced to grow up far too quickly.
Episode 5: Love and Other Acts of Courage
A familiar person returns under alien control, while the 2nd Mass captures a Skitter behaving very differently from those it has encountered before. Maggie shares painful details about her life before the invasion. The science-fiction developments are important, but the episode’s quieter conversations give them emotional substance.
Episode 6: Homecoming
Hal discovers abandoned harnessed children and someone he never expected to see again. Weaver’s health deteriorates as Tom learns that his commander has concealed important information about Charleston. The episode uses several apparent reunions to ask whether returning home is still possible after alien control.
Episode 7: Molon Labe
Skully’s Pick
The 2nd Mass captures a valuable Espheni prisoner but is soon trapped by an overwhelming alien force. Civilians sheltering beneath the hospital encounter a particularly unpleasant new organism, while loyalties above ground shift rapidly. It is one of the show’s strongest siege episodes, combining strategy, horror and personal betrayal.
Episode 8: Death March
Skully’s Pick
The convoy continues towards Charleston while its members process recent losses and wonder what they will find at the end of the road. Weaver learns about Tector’s military past, and Matt befriends a harnessed girl travelling with the group. Quiet by the programme’s standards, it succeeds by letting the characters talk rather than immediately firing at something.
Episode 9: The Price of Greatness
The 2nd Mass reaches Charleston and finds an organised underground settlement led by one of Tom’s former academic mentors. Initial relief gives way to concern about the settlement’s leadership and its willingness to continue fighting. Electricity and clean clothing are welcome, but they do not automatically make a government trustworthy.
Episode 10: A More Perfect Union
Skully’s Pick
An unexpected alliance offers the resistance an opportunity to strike an important Espheni position. Charleston’s leaders disagree over the risk, forcing Tom and the 2nd Mass to decide how much authority they are prepared to challenge. The season closes with a major shift in the war and the arrival of an entirely new question.
Season 3 (2013) – 10 Episodes
Seven months later, Charleston has become the centre of a growing resistance aided by the Volm. Tom must balance military leadership with political office, while a hidden enemy inside the settlement and troubling changes within his family make victory increasingly difficult to define.
Episode 1: On Thin Ice
Tom serves as president of the New United States and works closely with Volm ambassador Cochise. Success on the battlefield is undermined by evidence of an Espheni spy inside Charleston, while Hal suffers from paralysis and disturbing nocturnal experiences. The new government has barely started and already needs a counter-intelligence department.
Episode 2: Collateral Damage
Tom plans to destroy a nuclear facility supplying power to Espheni war machines without contaminating the surrounding region. Dr Roger Kadar is recruited to solve the technical problem as Anne becomes concerned about her rapidly developing baby. The episode balances a satisfyingly practical mission with several quieter sources of unease.
Episode 3: Badlands
A sniper attack brings another surviving political faction into contact with Charleston. Hal’s fear that he may be the Espheni mole intensifies, while Anne struggles to persuade others that something is wrong with Alexis. Suspicion spreads through the settlement faster than any formal investigation can contain it.
Episode 4: At All Costs
Tom travels to meet the surviving President of the United States and tries to unite the remaining human leadership behind the Volm alliance. In Charleston, Anne investigates Alexis’s unusual development as Hal’s condition worsens. Political legitimacy feels distinctly fragile when the presidential transport is whatever Pope can still persuade to fly.
Episode 5: Search and Recover
Skully’s Pick
After their aircraft crashes, Tom and Pope must cross hostile territory together with limited supplies. Weaver organises a search while the Mason family deals with another disappearance. Stripping the story back to two argumentative survivors produces one of the season’s strongest character episodes.
Episode 6: Be Silent and Come Out
Hal’s internal struggle erupts into a confrontation that places Tom and Charleston’s leadership at risk. His family attempts to reach him while a dangerous medical treatment offers uncertain hope. Drew Roy receives some of his best material here, making Hal’s loss of control genuinely upsetting.
Episode 7: The Pickett Line
Tom and his sons encounter an armed family while searching for Anne and Alexis. Back in Charleston, concerns about the Volm weapon grow as the investigation into the mole takes a decisive turn. The episode examines how quickly ordinary families can become territorial factions when every possession supports survival.
Episode 8: Strange Brew
Skully’s Pick
Tom awakens in a peaceful world where the invasion apparently never happened and his old life has continued without interruption. Small inconsistencies gradually persuade him that the comfortable reality cannot be trusted. It is an effective change of pace that turns Tom’s longing for normality into another battlefield.
Episode 9: Journey to Xibalba
Tom returns with crucial information about an Espheni vulnerability as Charleston prepares its offensive. An explosion traps several members of the resistance and finally narrows the search for the mole. The episode efficiently clears the board for the finale while keeping its characters under literal and political pressure.
Episode 10: Brazil
The 2nd Mass and its allies launch a coordinated attack on the Espheni defence grid. The arrival of powerful reinforcements appears to transform humanity’s prospects, but their plans for Earth do not necessarily match Tom’s. The finale delivers spectacle, reunions and proof that even friendly aliens may have neglected to circulate the full agenda.
Season 4 (2014) – 12 Episodes
A devastating Espheni assault scatters the 2nd Mass across prisons, re-education camps and isolated survivor communities. The split structure offers several strong escape stories, although the season’s growing focus on Alexis moves the series further into mystical science-fiction territory.
Episode 1: Ghost in the Machine
An Espheni weapon divides the returning 2nd Mass and sends its members into very different forms of captivity. Months later, Tom operates as a masked resistance figure inside a ghetto, Matt attempts to survive a youth camp and Anne searches for her daughter. The disorientation effectively restores the aliens’ sense of overwhelming power.
Episode 2: The Eye
The Espheni threaten to starve the ghetto unless Tom surrenders, giving him an opportunity to learn more about their plans for humanity. Elsewhere, Ben questions the apparently peaceful community surrounding the now-adult Lexi. Several separated stories begin moving, though not yet in anything resembling the same direction.
Episode 3: Exodus
Skully’s Pick
Tom, Weaver, Hal, Pope and Dingaan attempt to bring down the electrified barrier surrounding the ghetto. Matt risks exposure at the re-education camp, while Maggie confronts Lexi about her secret contact with an Overlord. The escape plot supplies the urgency and inventive resistance tactics at which the series is most reliable.
Episode 4: Evolve or Die
Tom and Weaver set out with Cochise to rescue Matt from the youth camp. Anne reaches Chinatown and reunites with Lexi, only to discover how much her daughter and the surrounding community have changed. Both stories explore parents trying to recover children who no longer need, or want, the same protection.
Episode 5: Mind Wars
Two strangers capture Tom after claiming they can help him reach safety. Weaver and Matt pursue them, while tensions between Anne and Lexi deepen in Chinatown. The woodland story is straightforward but effective, particularly when Tom tries to understand his captor rather than merely overpower him.
Episode 6: Door Number Three
Lexi enters a cocoon during a dangerous transformation, dividing her family over whether she should be saved or stopped. Anne becomes increasingly desperate to reach her daughter as the 2nd Mass finally reunites. The episode leans heavily into the season’s more mystical ideas, with mixed but undeniably peculiar results.
Episode 7: Saturday Night Massacre
Skully’s Pick
The Espheni launch a major assault on Chinatown, forcing the 2nd Mass and Volm to mount a desperate defence. Personal conflicts are abruptly overtaken by the need to keep the settlement alive. It is brutal, consequential and one of the season’s clearest reminders that victory always carries a human cost.
Episode 8: A Thing with Feathers
The survivors search the ruins of Chinatown while Maggie fights for her life. Tom and Dingaan discover that a crashed Beamer may still be usable, and Ben proposes a risky treatment for Maggie’s injuries. After the intensity of the previous episode, this chapter concentrates effectively on grief, ingenuity and recovery.
Episode 9: Til Death Do Us Part
Tom leads a mission to recover Volm equipment needed for the captured Beamer. Ben helps Maggie adjust to her new abilities, Pope’s relationship with Sara becomes strained and Tom reassesses his future with Anne. The title proves surprisingly literal for an episode that also involves alien spacecraft and compromised survivors.
Episode 10: Drawing Straws
The 2nd Mass learns that destroying an Espheni power source on the Moon could disable the invaders’ technology across Earth. With the captured Beamer apparently offering only a one-way journey, the volunteers must decide who will fly it. The mission is audacious enough to make Tom’s historical comparisons seem almost restrained.
Episode 11: Space Oddity
Lexi returns and offers to accompany Tom on the mission to the Moon, despite widespread mistrust. A malfunction forces the pair into an alien cocoon where perception becomes unreliable. The episode uses the journey to confront the damaged relationship between Tom and the daughter he barely had time to know.
Episode 12: Shoot the Moon
Skully’s Pick
Tom and Lexi approach the lunar power core as the Espheni launch a new attack against the 2nd Mass on Earth. Both groups face decisions that may determine whether humanity retains any chance of resisting. The finale is emotionally uneven but impressively ambitious, taking a series that began in a school hall all the way into space.
Season 5 (2015) – 10 Episodes
The final season returns Tom to Earth and shifts the resistance onto the offensive. It offers harder-edged battles, internal fractures and a march towards Washington, although the need to resolve the entire war in ten episodes sometimes produces a rather breathless endgame.
Episode 1: Find Your Warrior
Tom receives unexpected assistance while stranded after the lunar mission and returns with a far more aggressive attitude towards the Espheni. The 2nd Mass divides into strike teams as survivors elsewhere begin coordinating their attacks. His renewed determination is effective, though the history professor has clearly mislaid the chapter on moderation.
Episode 2: Hunger Pains
An attack destroys the group’s food supplies, sending Ben, Maggie, Pope and Sara to search an abandoned warehouse. They encounter two siblings living with the consequences of alien transformation, while Tom and Anne investigate a strange new creature. The supply run restores some welcome survival detail to the final campaign.
Episode 3: Hatchlings
The resistance investigates how the Espheni are producing replacement soldiers and searches for a way to destroy the source. Ben attempts to obtain information from a captured Overlord, while Tom must choose between the larger mission and an urgent rescue. The consequences place his leadership under unusually personal scrutiny.
Episode 4: Pope Breaks Bad
Pope’s grief turns his long-standing resentment of Tom into open rebellion. Cochise reveals that he is seriously ill, while divisions also emerge among other members of the 2nd Mass. Colin Cunningham commits fully to Pope’s anger, even when the speed of his transformation strains credibility.
Episode 5: Non-Essential Personnel
Tom pursues Pope’s new group in an attempt to recover Hal. Weaver encounters an armed survivor whose desperation threatens the travelling 2nd Mass, while Pope reveals how little protection he intends to offer anyone he considers unnecessary. The competing leadership styles make this a dark examination of who gets included in a community.
Episode 6: Respite
Skully’s Pick
An injured Tom awakens with a family that has somehow remained largely untouched by the war. Their ordinary domestic life reminds him what the resistance is actually attempting to preserve, while Hal and Isabella continue searching for him. This quieter, reflective story recaptures the humanity too often crowded out by the final season’s battles.
Episode 7: Everybody Has Their Reasons
The 2nd Mass reaches a functioning military base commanded by someone from Weaver’s past. Its soldiers appear disciplined and well supplied, but their obsession with identifying collaborators soon makes Ben a target. The episode understands that uniforms and procedures can conceal fear just as easily as they can restore order.
Episode 8: Stalag 14th Virginia
Tom and his family face execution as Weaver uncovers evidence that the base commander is not what she appears to be. The 2nd Mass prepares a rescue while the imprisoned group looks for its own escape. Paranoia, infiltration and military authority combine in a tense late-season confrontation.
Episode 9: Reunion
An unexpected visitor arrives as Tom receives a biological weapon that may finally defeat the Espheni. Ben searches the alien communications network for the enemy leadership, while Pope prepares another attack. The episode introduces several major endgame elements in quick succession, perhaps because the finale is already warming up the engines.
Episode 10: Reborn
Skully’s Pick
The combined militias converge on Washington, DC, where Tom leads a smaller force beneath the city in search of the Espheni leadership. The battle brings the Mason family, the 2nd Mass and their alien allies to the end of a war that has defined every part of their lives. Some revelations arrive too quickly, but the episode provides genuine closure and allows the survivors to consider what rebuilding might mean.
Falling Skies completes its main story across five seasons, with the final episode resolving the war rather than leaving viewers stranded beneath another cliffhanger. Its later mythology does not always repay the patient attention demanded by it, but the Mason family, Weaver and the surviving 2nd Mass receive a recognisable ending. After 52 episodes of walking, fighting and losing perfectly usable vehicles, they have certainly earned one.
