Sam and Dean Winchester travel across the United States in a black 1967 Chevrolet Impala, investigating ghosts, demons, monsters and urban legends. Their business expenses appear to be funded through credit-card fraud, their health insurance situation is best left unexplored, and almost every motel they visit has wallpaper capable of causing nightmares without supernatural assistance.
When the series begins, Sam has abandoned the hunting life to attend university, while Dean remains with their father, John, pursuing the creature that killed their mother. After another devastating attack, the brothers reunite and follow John’s trail, moving from one mysterious death or unexplained disappearance to the next.
The early seasons mix self-contained horror stories with a developing family mystery. Haunted houses, shapeshifters and vengeful spirits gradually give way to demons, angels, biblical prophecy and increasingly complicated cosmic disputes. Through every expansion of the mythology, the emotional centre remains the relationship between two brothers who will sacrifice anything for one another, including common sense, the natural order and occasionally the continued stability of the universe.
Fifteen seasons and 327 episodes make Supernatural a substantial undertaking, and its quality inevitably fluctuates. At its best, however, it combines horror, fantasy, road-movie atmosphere, family drama and irreverent comedy with an unusual willingness to experiment. Few programmes could move from an apocalyptic confrontation to a talking teddy bear, a television crossover or an argument about pie without losing their identity.

Sam and Dean Winchester were raised as hunters after a yellow-eyed demon killed their mother, Mary, in Sam’s nursery. Their father, John, devoted his life to finding the creature responsible, training his sons to recognise and kill supernatural threats along the way.
Sam eventually leaves the family to study at Stanford University and build a normal life with his girlfriend, Jessica Moore. Dean brings him back into hunting when John disappears, but Sam initially intends to return to university as soon as their father has been found. Those plans end when Jessica is killed in exactly the same manner as Mary.
The brothers search for John while investigating supernatural cases across America. Sam begins experiencing psychic visions connected to other young people whose mothers died in nursery fires. John eventually reveals that the yellow-eyed demon is named Azazel and possesses the Colt, a weapon created by Samuel Colt that can kill almost any supernatural being.
At the end of the first season, Azazel possesses John and attempts to manipulate Sam and Dean. The family escapes, but their car is deliberately struck by a demonically controlled lorry.
Dean is critically injured in the crash. John secretly bargains with Azazel, surrendering both the Colt and his soul in exchange for Dean’s life. He dies shortly afterwards, leaving Dean burdened by the knowledge that his father sacrificed himself for him.
Azazel gathers Sam and the other psychic young adults, forcing them into a deadly contest intended to identify a leader for his demonic army. Jake Talley kills Sam, but Dean sells his soul to resurrect his brother and is given one year before hellhounds collect him.
The brothers recover the Colt and confront Azazel as he opens a gateway to Hell. John’s spirit briefly escapes and distracts the demon, allowing Dean to kill him, but hundreds of other demons are released into the world. John then moves on, leaving his sons to deal with both the escaped army and Dean’s approaching death.
During the third season, Sam desperately searches for a way to break Dean’s contract. They are assisted by Ruby, a demon who claims she remembers being human, and repeatedly obstructed by thief and occult dealer Bela Talbot. The demon Lilith ultimately reveals herself as the holder of Dean’s contract.
Sam is unable to save his brother. Hellhounds tear Dean apart, and his soul is taken to Hell.
Four months later, Dean awakens inside his grave. The angel Castiel reveals that he rescued Dean on God’s orders because the hunter has an important role in preventing the apocalypse. Dean later learns that decades of torture in Hell eventually persuaded him to torture other souls, breaking the first of 66 seals needed to free Lucifer.
Sam has meanwhile strengthened his psychic abilities by drinking demon blood under Ruby’s guidance. He becomes powerful enough to kill demons without conventional weapons, but his growing dependence changes his behaviour and creates a bitter division between the brothers.
Angels and demons race to control the remaining seals. Sam is manipulated into killing Lilith, believing her death will prevent Lucifer’s release. Instead, Lilith is the final seal. Ruby admits that she has been serving Lucifer all along before Dean kills her, but the brothers are too late to stop the Devil escaping.
Lucifer and the archangel Michael require Sam and Dean as their destined vessels for an apocalyptic confrontation. Both brothers resist, while Castiel rebels against Heaven and discovers that many angels actively want the final battle to occur.
Their attempt to kill Lucifer with the Colt fails. They instead collect the rings belonging to the Four Horsemen, which can reopen Lucifer’s prison. The archangel Gabriel, long disguised as the Trickster, helps them but is apparently killed by Lucifer.
Sam ultimately agrees to become Lucifer’s vessel, intending to overpower him long enough to enter the Cage. Lucifer initially takes complete control, but Sam’s memories of his life with Dean allow him to reassert himself. He throws himself into the Cage, taking Lucifer and Michael—who is occupying the body of the Winchesters’ half-brother Adam—with him.
Castiel is killed during the confrontation but restored with greater power, while Bobby is resurrected after having his neck broken. Dean honours his promise to Sam by abandoning hunting and building a life with Lisa Braeden and her son, Ben. Unknown to him, Sam has somehow returned.
The resurrected Sam has no soul, leaving him efficient, fearless and dangerously lacking in empathy. Dean eventually discovers the truth and forces Death to retrieve Sam’s soul from the Cage, although a protective barrier is placed around his memories of Lucifer’s imprisonment.
Their maternal grandfather, Samuel Campbell, has also been resurrected and is working for Crowley, now King of Hell. Crowley seeks access to Purgatory, believing the realm’s countless souls will provide enormous power.
Castiel is fighting a civil war in Heaven against the archangel Raphael. He secretly works with Crowley to locate Purgatory, hoping to use its souls to defeat Raphael. Despite warnings from Sam and Dean, Castiel absorbs the souls, destroys Raphael and declares himself the new God.
The power proves unstable because Castiel has also released the Leviathans, ancient creatures imprisoned by God before humanity was created. They escape his body and infiltrate human society under the leadership of wealthy businessman Dick Roman.
Bobby is shot by Roman and dies from his injuries. He remains as a ghost attached to his flask, helping the brothers until anger begins turning him into a vengeful spirit. Sam and Dean reluctantly destroy the flask, allowing him to move on.
With help from prophet Kevin Tran, the brothers discover a weapon capable of killing Leviathans. Dean and Castiel destroy Roman, but the resulting explosion sends them to Purgatory. Sam, left alone, abandons hunting and begins a relationship with veterinarian Amelia Richardson.
Dean survives Purgatory with help from a vampire named Benny, while Castiel remains behind. When Dean returns, his friendship with Benny and resentment of Sam’s decision to stop searching for him create fresh conflict between the brothers.
Kevin translates a tablet containing a series of trials that could permanently close the gates of Hell. Sam kills a hellhound, rescues an innocent soul from Hell and begins curing Crowley of his demonic nature. Dean stops him from completing the final trial after learning it will kill him.
The angel Metatron persuades Castiel to complete what he claims are trials capable of closing Heaven. He instead steals Castiel’s grace and expels every other angel to Earth, causing thousands of them to fall from the sky.
Sam becomes gravely ill following the abandoned trials. Dean allows an angel calling himself Ezekiel to possess Sam without his informed consent, believing the angel can heal him internally. The angel is actually Gadreel, the former guardian blamed for allowing Lucifer into the Garden of Eden.
Working for Metatron, Gadreel kills Kevin. Sam eventually expels him, but his trust in Dean is badly damaged. Meanwhile, Abaddon, one of the Knights of Hell, challenges Crowley for control of the underworld.
Dean obtains the First Blade from Cain and accepts the Mark of Cain, which allows him to kill Abaddon but intensifies his aggression. Metatron subsequently kills Dean, and the power of the Mark resurrects him as a demon.
Crowley initially encourages Demon Dean’s violent independence, but Sam captures his brother and restores his humanity through a demon-curing ritual. The Mark remains, however, and Dean becomes increasingly dangerous.
Crowley’s mother, the powerful witch Rowena MacLeod, arrives and begins manipulating both her son and the Winchesters. Sam secretly works with Rowena, Castiel and Charlie Bradbury to remove the Mark. Charlie is killed by members of the Styne family while helping decode the Book of the Damned, driving Dean into a brutal revenge campaign.
Death tells Dean that the Mark is the lock containing the Darkness, a primordial force that existed before creation. Dean refuses Death’s proposed solution and kills him instead. Rowena removes the Mark, unintentionally releasing the Darkness.
The Darkness takes human form as Amara and develops a mysterious connection with Dean. She is eventually revealed as God’s sister, whom God imprisoned so that creation could exist.
The writer Chuck Shurley, previously believed to be a prophet, reveals that he is God. He reluctantly joins the Winchesters, angels, demons and witches in an attempt to defeat Amara. Lucifer is released from the Cage and possesses Castiel, hoping to confront her himself.
God and Lucifer briefly reconcile, but Amara defeats them. Dean agrees to carry a soul bomb intended to destroy both himself and the Darkness. Instead, he convinces Amara that revenge will not heal her estrangement from her brother. She reconciles with God and rewards Dean by restoring Mary Winchester to life.
Mary struggles to adapt to her adult sons and eventually works with the British Men of Letters, an organisation seeking to control American hunters. Its ruthless methods lead to open conflict, and the Winchesters ultimately destroy its American operation.
Lucifer possesses the President of the United States and fathers a Nephilim child with presidential aide Kelly Kline. Castiel comes to believe that the unborn child could create a better world and protects Kelly from both Heaven and the Winchesters.
A dimensional rift reveals an alternate world devastated by the apocalypse the Winchesters prevented. Crowley sacrifices himself to seal Lucifer inside that reality, but Lucifer kills Castiel and drags Mary through the closing portal. Kelly dies giving birth to her fully grown son, Jack.
Sam and Dean take responsibility for Jack, although Dean initially believes Lucifer’s son will inevitably become evil. Jack chooses Castiel as one of his fathers and gradually wins Dean’s trust. His powers also awaken Castiel inside the Empty, the realm where angels and demons supposedly sleep after death.
The brothers reopen the portal to rescue Mary and the surviving humans from the alternate world. They discover that the archangel Gabriel is alive and being held prisoner, but he is killed by the alternate version of Michael during the evacuation.
Lucifer steals Jack’s grace and becomes powerful enough to threaten the world. Dean agrees to serve as Michael’s vessel on the condition that Michael surrender control once Lucifer has been defeated. Michael kills Lucifer but breaks the agreement, taking possession of Dean’s body.
Dean eventually regains control, trapping Michael inside his mind. Michael escapes and possesses Rowena, but Jack destroys him and absorbs his grace. The act burns away the remainder of Jack’s soul, leaving him unable to understand the emotional consequences of his actions.
Jack accidentally kills Mary when she confronts him over his increasingly dangerous behaviour. Sam, Dean and Castiel are devastated, and Dean becomes determined to imprison Jack.
Chuck returns and provides Dean with a weapon that will kill Jack, although it will also kill whoever fires it. Dean refuses to shoot his surrogate son. Chuck responds by killing Jack himself and revealing that he has been treating the Winchesters’ lives as entertainment. When Sam shoots Chuck, God opens the gates of Hell and raises the dead.
Jack awakens inside the Empty, where Death’s successor, Billie, has plans for him. On Earth, Rowena sacrifices herself to close the rupture into Hell and subsequently becomes its queen.
The Winchesters discover that Chuck has destroyed every alternate universe and is manipulating events towards an ending in which one brother kills the other. Billie intends for Jack to become powerful enough to destroy God, but her plan would also restore the rigid cosmic order and eliminate beings that do not belong in their assigned worlds.
Castiel prevents Billie from killing Dean by summoning the Empty through an expression of genuine happiness. He tells Dean that loving and protecting others changed him, then allows the Empty to take both himself and Billie.
Chuck removes everyone else from existence, leaving Sam, Dean and Jack alone. The brothers refuse to perform his preferred ending and allow him to beat them nearly to death. Jack has been quietly absorbing the divine energy released around him, however, and drains Chuck of his power.
Rather than kill him, the Winchesters leave Chuck mortal and powerless. Jack becomes the new God, absorbs Amara and restores the world. He promises to remain present within creation without controlling every decision, then leaves Sam and Dean to write their own lives.
The brothers return to ordinary hunting. During a case involving masked vampires, Dean is impaled on a metal bar. Realising that the injury is fatal, he asks Sam not to bring him back and dies after telling his brother how proud he is of him.
Dean reaches a transformed Heaven where people are no longer isolated inside individual memories. Bobby explains that Jack rebuilt Heaven with Castiel’s help. Dean drives through the afterlife in the Impala while time passes differently on Earth.
Sam gives up hunting, raises a son named Dean and lives into old age. After his death, he joins his brother on a bridge in Heaven. Having spent their lives repeatedly separated by death, possession, sacrifice and some exceptionally questionable bargains, Sam and Dean are finally reunited without another apocalypse waiting around the corner.

Worth knowing before you start: This is a 327-episode commitment and the quality is not consistent. Creator Eric Kripke’s original five-season storyline provides the programme’s most cohesive arc, while later seasons repeatedly reinvent the mythology with varying success. Death also becomes increasingly reversible, which inevitably weakens the impact of some apparent farewells. Even during weaker storylines, the central performances and occasional outstanding standalone episode usually provide a reason to continue.
The prequel series The Winchesters is best watched after Supernatural. Although set before the original programme, its framing story and conclusion depend upon developments from the main series.

Although Supernatural leans more towards horror and dark fantasy than traditional science fiction, its longevity, cultural reach and extraordinary flexibility made it one of twenty-first-century genre television’s defining programmes.

- 📺 Metafiction and tonal experimentation: The series can acknowledge its writers, actors, fans and status as a television production, then return to sincere drama without completely breaking its world. When these experiments work, they produce some of its most memorable hours.
