Caprica Episode Guide

Caprica is not the sort of science-fiction series you can watch while occasionally wandering off to make a cup of tea. Corporate rivalries, religious conspiracies and several versions of the same characters quickly become entangled, while seemingly minor decisions can have consequences several episodes later.

The story begins with the feature-length “Pilot” and then follows the Graystone and Adama families as grief draws them into artificial intelligence, organised crime and the growing conflict between monotheism and the established colonial faith. Along the way, the series reveals how Daniel Graystone’s experimental robot becomes something far more important than he intended.

This guide follows the episodes in release order, with short, spoiler-light summaries and Skully’s Picks highlighting the instalments that stand out most strongly.

Before you press play: Caprica tells one continuous story, so skipping episodes is not recommended. The summaries become slightly more revealing as the season progresses, although they avoid disclosing the biggest twists. The series was cancelled after one season, but its final episode provides a substantial conclusion and a revealing glimpse of what would have followed.

Season 1 (2010) – 18 Episodes

The only season of Caprica begins as a family drama shaped by an act of terrorism, before gradually widening into a story about artificial life, religious extremism and the birth of the Cylons. Its measured pace rewards patience, particularly once the separate journeys through Caprica, Tauron and the virtual world begin to converge.

Episode 1: Pilot

Skully’s Pick

A devastating terrorist attack links technology entrepreneur Daniel Graystone with Tauron-born lawyer Joseph Adama, both of whom have lost daughters. Daniel’s discovery that Zoe created a remarkably lifelike digital version of herself offers the grieving fathers an extraordinary possibility, but his determination to preserve it leads him across several moral boundaries.

Episode 2: Rebirth

One month after the bombing, Caprica is still struggling with the consequences and Amanda Graystone makes an emotional public revelation about her daughter. Zoe, meanwhile, discovers that existing inside Daniel’s experimental robot body comes with limitations she had never imagined.

Episode 3: Reins of a Waterfall

Public anger turns towards the Graystone family as more details about Zoe’s beliefs emerge. While Daniel attempts to protect his company, Joseph seeks revenge and another lost daughter begins to find her way through the virtual world.

Episode 4: Gravedancing

Daniel and Amanda agree to appear on a popular television programme in an effort to repair their family’s reputation. Away from the cameras, Lacy tries to find someone capable of transporting Zoe’s robotic body to Gemenon.

Episode 5: There Is Another Sky

Skully’s Pick

Tamara explores the dangerous game world of New Cap City and makes an astonishing discovery about her virtual existence. In the real world, Daniel gambles the future of Graystone Industries on proving that his prototype Cylon can become a viable military machine.

Episode 6: Know Thy Enemy

Tomas Vergis arrives on Caprica with a business proposal that conceals a deeply personal grievance against Daniel. Clarice and a rival STO faction compete for Lacy’s loyalty, while Joseph continues looking for a way to reach Tamara.

Episode 7: The Imperfections of Memory

Amanda’s encounters with someone from her past leave her questioning her own senses, giving Clarice an opportunity to become a trusted confidante. Daniel grows increasingly suspicious that Zoe’s avatar may still be hiding inside the Cylon, and Joseph enters New Cap City to search for his daughter.

Episode 8: Ghosts in the Machine

Skully’s Pick

Convinced that Zoe is controlling the prototype, Daniel devises a series of increasingly cruel tests intended to force her into revealing herself. Joseph’s journey through New Cap City brings him closer to Tamara, but the virtual world extracts a heavy price from those who become lost inside it.

Episode 9: End of Line

Zoe’s escape plan finally begins, forcing her to decide how much of herself she is prepared to reveal. Joseph’s search reaches a painful turning point, while Clarice’s rivalry with Barnabas places Amanda directly in the path of danger.

Episode 10: Unvanquished

Three weeks later, Daniel turns to the Ha’la’tha in an attempt to recover everything he has lost. Clarice takes her vision of Apotheosis to the leaders of the monotheist church, while Zoe and Tamara acquire almost legendary reputations inside New Cap City.

Episode 11: Retribution

Daniel makes an aggressive move to regain control of Graystone Industries, but his new allies expect repayment. Lacy becomes involved in a disastrous STO operation, and Amanda is asked to help expose Clarice’s plans from inside her household.

Episode 12: Things We Lock Away

Memories of Zoe’s earliest experiments reveal how her avatar was created and why it developed an identity of its own. Tamara challenges Zoe’s place in New Cap City, while Daniel’s conflict with Tomas Vergis reaches a grim and intensely personal moment.

Episode 13: False Labor

Tensions within Sam’s family expose the continuing suffering on Tauron and the difficult choices faced by those trying to help the resistance. Daniel begins developing a commercial version of his resurrection technology, while Amanda searches Clarice’s home for evidence.

Episode 14: Blowback

Lacy’s journey to Gemenon takes a violent turn, leaving her trapped among people whose true loyalties are uncertain. Amanda’s undercover role becomes increasingly dangerous as Duram closes in on Clarice, while Daniel discovers that his criminal partnership carries wider consequences.

Episode 15: The Dirteaters

Flashbacks to occupied Tauron reveal the childhood experiences that forged Joseph and Sam’s relationship. In the present, the brothers face another test of family and loyalty, while Lacy learns that the Cylons respond to her in an unexpected way.

Episode 16: The Heavens Will Rise

Amanda’s position inside the Willow household becomes almost impossible to maintain as Clarice’s suspicions grow. Daniel, Joseph and Sam prepare to confront a powerful enemy, while Zoe and Tamara begin reshaping the virtual world around them.

Episode 17: Here Be Dragons

A violent assault forces Daniel and Amanda into the virtual world, where they desperately search for Zoe. On Gemenon, Lacy confronts the leadership responsible for her captivity as the growing Cylon army begins to recognise a new authority.

Episode 18: Apotheosis

Skully’s Pick

Clarice’s plans for the Atlas Arena enter their final and most destructive phase, compelling the Graystone family to fight an attack unfolding in both the real and virtual worlds. The finale brings the immediate story to a satisfying climax before looking ahead to the Cylons, the Adama family and the society that will eventually become the Twelve Colonies seen in Battlestar Galactica.

Although Caprica was cancelled before it could receive a second season, “Apotheosis” offers more closure than many short-lived series are afforded. Its closing scenes move quickly through several future developments, providing a fascinating bridge between Zoe Graystone’s creation and the world that will one day face the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.
