Mysterious countdowns and an extraordinarily advanced virtual-reality game gradually reveal that the apparent collapse of fundamental physics is not a natural phenomenon.

Episode 1: Countdown

A young Ye Wenjie witnesses her physicist father’s death during the Chinese Cultural Revolution before being sent to work at the isolated Red Coast base. Decades later, intelligence officer Clarence Shi investigates a succession of unexplained deaths among prominent scientists. Nanotechnology researcher Auggie Salazar begins seeing a countdown that nobody else can see, while Jin Cheng receives a mysterious virtual-reality headset.

Auggie’s countdown places her nanofibre project under intolerable pressure, with a disturbing warning about what will happen if she continues her research. Jin enters the VR game and attempts to understand a civilisation repeatedly destroyed by unpredictable changes in its three suns. At Red Coast, Ye discovers the true purpose of the facility and receives a message that could alter humanity’s future.

Episode 3: Destroyer of Worlds

Jin and Jack Rooney become increasingly absorbed in the VR game, where solving the three-body problem appears to offer a way of saving its inhabitants. Their progress brings them closer to the intelligence behind the simulation, but Jack grows suspicious of the people recruiting its successful players. Clarence’s investigation begins connecting the headsets, the dead scientists and a secretive organisation operating in the real world.

Episode 4: Our Lord

The history between Ye Wenjie and environmentalist Mike Evans reveals how contact with the distant San-Ti developed into a movement on Earth. Jin attends a secret gathering whose members regard the approaching civilisation as humanity’s salvation rather than its enemy. As investigators prepare to move against the organisation, the San-Ti make a deeply unsettling judgement about their human allies.

Auggie’s extraordinarily strong nanofibres become central to a dangerous operation intended to recover information from Mike Evans and his followers. The resulting data reveals how the San-Ti have interfered with scientific research and maintained almost complete surveillance of Earth. Humanity finally understands the scale of the approaching threat, together with the enormous technological disadvantage it must overcome before the fleet arrives.

Episode 6: The Stars Our Destination

Governments begin organising a planetary response to an invasion that remains approximately four centuries away. Thomas Wade recruits Jin to develop the Staircase Project, an ambitious proposal to send a probe towards the approaching fleet using present-day technology. Meanwhile, terminally ill Will Downing makes an extraordinary purchase and considers whether his remaining life might contribute to humanity’s survival.

Episode 7: Only Advance

The Staircase Project requires a human brain, creating a painful decision for Will and those closest to him. Auggie becomes increasingly disturbed by how her technology is being used, while Jin commits herself to a plan whose subject may never return. Ye prepares to pass on one final piece of information, and the San-Ti begin searching for new human assistance.

Saul Durand is baffled and alarmed when he is selected despite insisting that he has no plan to save humanity. Wade receives a demonstration of the enemy’s reach, while Clarence attempts to restore hope by reminding Jin and Saul that survival does not always belong to the apparently superior species.
