Episode 1: Episode #101 (Pilot)

Oceanographer Laura Daughtery encounters an enormous unknown life form during a deep-sea dive, while fisherman Rich Connelly suffers a devastating loss in the Gulf of Mexico. In North Carolina, teenager Miles Barnett retrieves a mysterious egg from the water, neatly ensuring that the ocean’s newest problem will not remain in the ocean for long.

Episode 2: Episode #102

Laura and Rich are independently drawn towards a strange carcass found on Sullivan’s Island, where the authorities appear considerably more interested in containing witnesses than collecting evidence. Miles names his newly hatched creature Nimrod, but hiding an electrically charged aquatic animal becomes difficult when Savannah throws a party.

Episode 3: Episode #103

Reports of destructive creatures spread as Laura’s investigation begins damaging both her reputation and her career. Rich experiences troubling visions connected to his brother, while Miles discovers that thunderstorms and mysterious sea creatures make a particularly lively combination.

Episode 4: Episode #104

Laura recruits her former partner Jackson to help track one of the creatures at sea, turning scientific curiosity into a considerably more dangerous expedition. Rich searches for the locations appearing in his visions, and Dr Cirko faces resistance when he tries to warn the Pentagon about the scale of the threat.

Episode 5: Episode #105

A tracking signal leads Laura and Rich to a public pier, where the creature’s presence becomes rather harder for officials to dismiss. Back home, Miles and Phil scramble to conceal Nim from Animal Control, discovering that secret pets are much easier when they do not disrupt electrical systems.

Episode 6: Episode #106

Skully’s Pick

Cirko reaches a crucial conclusion about the creatures’ origin, but his discovery places him in immediate danger. Laura and Rich inherit evidence that powerful people are determined to recover, while Miles can no longer prevent his family from learning what has been living in the garden.

Episode 7: Episode #107

With Laura’s home compromised, she and Rich seek refuge while examining the material left behind by Cirko. Miles makes a desperate attempt to protect Nim from the authorities, forcing him into an emotional decision that gives the episode considerably more weight than its creature-feature premise might suggest.

Episode 8: Episode #108

Laura, Rich and Jackson assemble a small submersible to investigate the creatures’ spawning ground directly. Miles begins working at an aquarium, placing him in the one environment where his unusual knowledge may be helpful rather than merely alarming.

Episode 9: Episode #109

The improvised dive leaves Laura and Rich trapped beneath the ocean, where their discovery suggests the phenomenon is vastly larger than anyone imagined. Miles and Phil investigate trouble at the docks, but their search brings Miles dangerously close to other members of Nim’s species.

Episode 10: Episode #110

Laura and Rich return from the ocean floor only to find themselves stranded and fighting to survive on the surface. Meanwhile, Miles becomes seriously ill, and Savannah begins to suspect that his connection with Nim has changed him in ways nobody understands.

Episode 11: Episode #111

Laura and Rich attempt to make their evidence public before Lee’s agents can silence them, only to learn how easily extraordinary footage can be dismissed once somebody labels it a fake. Miles faces the possible loss of Nim as scientists begin examining the creature.

Episode 12: Episode #112

Now fugitives, Laura and Rich receive information from a mysterious stranger who claims to understand where the creatures came from. A teenage gathering near the water turns frighteningly dangerous, while Miles’s increasingly unusual connection to the species pushes his storyline into much darker territory.

Episode 13: Episode #113

Laura and Rich pursue the scientists behind the creatures, moving closer to the human decisions concealed beneath the biological mystery. Miles joins an aquarium expedition searching for unhatched eggs, but his personal connection to the species makes him rather more than an impartial observer.

Episode 14: Episode #114

Laura and Rich force Lee to provide answers about the experiments and the organisation protecting them, although the encounter exposes a more volatile side of Rich. Miles returns to school as an outsider and discovers that fear can make familiar people every bit as dangerous as the creatures.

Episode 15: Episode #115

Skully’s Pick

A massive tsunami approaches Wilmington, scattering the characters through an evacuation that finally draws their separate journeys together. The finale delivers the series’ largest spectacle, opens the door to an even more ambitious story and then ends just when you most want the next episode. Cruel, really.

Surface was cancelled after these 15 episodes, leaving the aftermath of the finale and several central questions unresolved. There is no second season or continuation, but the existing run still works as an energetic creature mystery whose ambition grows noticeably as it progresses. Just do not expect the ocean to surrender all its answers before the credits roll.
