Millennium Episode Guide

Frank Black can see into the minds of murderers. Unfortunately, what he finds there tends to follow him home. Millennium begins as an exceptionally dark criminal-profiling drama before expanding into supernatural horror, apocalyptic conspiracy and the internal politics of a secret organisation preparing for the end of the century.

This guide follows all 67 episodes in their original US broadcast order. The short descriptions remain spoiler-light, while Skully’s Picks identify especially strong episodes rather than a recommended shortcut. With a series this serialised, skipping around is liable to leave you wondering why everyone suddenly distrusts the helpful men with the ouroboros badges.

Fox cancelled Millennium after its third season, leaving several storylines unresolved. Frank Black subsequently appeared in “Millennium”, an episode from the seventh season of The X-Files that provides limited additional closure.

Before you press play: Watching in order is strongly recommended. Standalone investigations gradually introduce characters, symbols and ideas that become important to the larger mythology. Later-season descriptions inevitably disclose changes resulting from earlier events, but individual episode entries avoid revealing their own largest twists.

Season 1 (1996-1997) – 22 Episodes

The first season introduces Frank, Catherine and Jordan Black as they settle into their yellow house in Seattle. Frank consults for the mysterious Millennium Group on violent crimes, drawing upon an extraordinary ability to understand killers while attempting to keep their darkness outside his family home.

Episode 1: Pilot

Skully’s Pick

Former FBI profiler Frank Black helps Seattle police investigate a killer whose crimes are shaped by religious obsession and fear of the approaching millennium. David Nutter’s oppressive direction and Lance Henriksen’s quiet authority establish the programme’s identity immediately.

Episode 2: Gehenna

A mass grave filled with burned victims leads Frank to a controlling cult operating behind an apparently respectable business. The investigation tests whether his visions represent refined intuition or contact with something darker.

Episode 3: Dead Letters

Frank is paired with Jim Horn, a Millennium Group candidate whose emotional instability threatens their pursuit of a murderer. The case demonstrates why understanding violent minds requires discipline as well as instinct.

Episode 4: The Judge

A self-appointed judge uses former prisoners to carry out grotesque sentences against people he considers guilty. Frank must identify the organisation behind the killings before its peculiar system of justice claims another victim.

Episode 5: 522666

A bomber stages explosions so that he can appear at the scene as a heroic rescuer. Frank enters a battle of wits with a man driven as much by his hunger for attention as his willingness to kill.

Episode 6: Kingdom Come

Clergymen are targeted by an offender whose crimes emerge from a profound crisis of faith. The investigation forces Frank to consider the difference between religious conviction and the violence committed in its name.

Episode 7: Blood Relatives

Skully’s Pick

Mourners are murdered after funerals, leading Frank and Catherine towards a lonely young man who infiltrates grieving families. The episode finds genuine sadness beneath its disturbing premise without excusing the violence that follows.

Episode 8: The Well-Worn Lock

Catherine assists a woman who accuses her respected father of maintaining an abusive hold over his family. The case places Catherine at the centre and examines how power can suppress the truth for decades.

Episode 9: Wide Open

A couple are murdered inside a supposedly secure home while their young daughter survives as a witness. Frank attempts to retrieve the child’s fragmented memories as the killer prepares to strike again.

Episode 10: The Wild and the Innocent

Frank searches for a young couple travelling with an abducted child and leaving violence behind them. Their story proves more complicated than the initial evidence suggests, blurring the usual distinction between victim and offender.

Episode 11: Weeds

Teenage boys disappear from an affluent gated community whose residents guard their reputations as fiercely as their property. Frank suspects that the abductions are intended to punish the parents through their children.

Episode 12: Loin Like a Hunting Flame

A killer targets people exploring sexual fantasies and treats desire as a weakness to be exploited. Frank’s pursuit moves through the artificial intimacy of dating services and carefully manufactured attraction.

Episode 13: Force Majeure

A series of deaths involving identical young women leads Frank towards a wealthy man preparing for a global catastrophe. The episode moves beyond conventional profiling and offers an early taste of the programme’s apocalyptic ambitions.

Episode 14: The Thin White Line

A new murder resembles crimes committed by a killer Frank encountered early in his FBI career. Returning to the case forces him to examine the experience that first exposed his unusual ability.

Episode 15: Sacrament

The abduction of Frank’s sister-in-law makes an investigation painfully personal. With his brother’s family threatened, Frank must work through fear and anger without allowing either to overwhelm his judgement.

Episode 16: Covenant

Skully’s Pick

A sheriff confesses to murdering his wife and children, but Frank doubts that the evidence reflects the whole truth. The resulting investigation is a restrained and morally difficult examination of family, responsibility and sacrifice.

Episode 17: Walkabout

Frank awakens in an unfamiliar situation with no memory of how he arrived there. His attempt to reconstruct the missing time turns the profiler’s gaze inward and confronts his dependence upon the darkness he claims only to endure.

Episode 18: Lamentation

Skully’s Pick

A dangerous offender escapes custody, drawing Frank into an investigation involving the enigmatic Lucy Butler. Evil crosses the boundary between Frank’s professional and family lives with devastating consequences.

Episode 19: Powers, Principalities, Thrones and Dominions

Frank investigates a strange death while grieving a personal loss. Two mysterious men appear to represent opposing forces, pushing the series decisively towards the possibility of a supernatural struggle.

Episode 20: Broken World

Animal mutilations suggest that an offender is rehearsing before attacking human victims. Frank races to identify a troubled young man whose violent fantasies are moving towards their final stage.

Episode 21: Maranatha

A Russian community believes a murderer may be linked to an apocalyptic prophecy and the legacy of Chernobyl. Frank must separate folklore, guilt and historical trauma from the immediate threat.

Episode 22: Paper Dove

Frank investigates a woman’s murder while visiting Catherine’s family, despite evidence pointing towards the victim’s husband. At the same time, the stalker who drove the Blacks from Washington prepares to make direct contact.

Season 2 (1997-1998) – 23 Episodes

Glen Morgan and James Wong steer the second season deeper into supernatural and apocalyptic territory. Frank’s family life suffers after Catherine’s abduction, while his introduction to Lara Means and the inner workings of the Millennium Group exposes divisions hidden beneath its solemn public face.

Episode 1: The Beginning and the End

Frank desperately searches for Catherine after her abduction, knowing that the man responsible intends to lure him into a personal confrontation. The rescue brings consequences that cannot be repaired simply by returning to the yellow house.

Episode 2: Beware of the Dog

A pack of vicious dogs terrorises an isolated community as Frank investigates without the Group’s official support. An elderly resident provides unsettling information about the organisation and its preparations for the future.

Episode 3: Sense and Antisense

Frank joins the search for a man believed to be carrying a deadly infectious disease. Conflicting evidence points towards genetic experimentation, government secrecy and the ease with which scientific fear can be weaponised.

Episode 4: Monster

Frank and new Group psychologist Lara Means investigate allegations of abuse at a childcare centre. Suspicion spreads rapidly through the community, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish genuine danger from manipulated hysteria.

Episode 5: A Single Blade of Grass

A ritualistic death in Manhattan appears connected to an isolated Native American group and its prophecies. The case presents another culture’s vision of the approaching end, although its treatment of that culture has not aged especially gracefully.

Episode 6: The Curse of Frank Black

Skully’s Pick

Alone on Halloween, Frank wanders through his old neighbourhood and encounters memories of a troubled veteran from his childhood. Quiet, eerie and unusually reflective, the episode allows atmosphere and regret to carry the story.

Episode 7: 19:19

A man abducts a busload of children and imprisons them underground in accordance with his reading of biblical prophecy. Frank must interpret the offender’s beliefs before time and oxygen run out.

Episode 8: The Hand of Saint Sebastian

Frank and Peter travel to Germany in pursuit of a religious relic and documents concerning the Group’s origins. Their discoveries suggest an organisation with roots extending back towards the first millennium.

Episode 9: Jose Chung’s Doomsday Defense

Skully’s Pick

Author Jose Chung joins Frank after a murder connected to a fashionable belief system founded by a science-fiction writer. Darin Morgan delivers a sharp, funny examination of self-help culture, organised certainty and humanity’s impressive ability to monetise dread.

Episode 10: Midnight of the Century

Christmas awakens memories of Frank’s childhood and draws him back towards his estranged father. Jordan’s developing sensitivity suggests that the Black family’s unusual perceptions may pass between generations.

Episode 11: Goodbye Charlie

Frank and Lara investigate a hospice worker suspected of disguising murders as assisted suicides. The case refuses easy moral answers as compassion, control and self-interest become dangerously entangled.

Episode 12: Luminary

Skully’s Pick

Ignoring the Group’s orders, Frank travels into the Alaskan wilderness to search for a missing young man. The landscape and the case strip away conventional procedure, leaving Frank to rely upon instinct, endurance and faith.

Episode 13: The Mikado

A dormant serial killer apparently resumes his crimes and broadcasts them online. Frank and computer specialist Brian Roedecker confront an early vision of the internet as a stage capable of turning murder into global entertainment.

Episode 14: The Pest House

Killings resembling urban legends occur near a psychiatric facility housing violent offenders. As possible suspects multiply, Frank questions whether the crimes originate with one patient or with stories that have escaped into the wider world.

Episode 15: Owls

The search for a fragment believed to come from the True Cross exposes a schism within the Millennium Group. Members known as the Owls interpret the approaching crisis through secular history rather than biblical prophecy.

Episode 16: Roosters

Frank becomes trapped between the Group’s competing factions as the struggle over the relic continues. Old connections to wartime conspiracies demonstrate how readily sacred belief and political power can become allies.

Episode 17: Siren

The interception of a ship carrying migrants introduces Frank to a mysterious woman who seems able to appear as whatever her observer most desires. His judgement is tested by visions of a repaired family life.

Episode 18: In Arcadia Ego

Two escaped prisoners flee through Idaho, one claiming her unborn child was conceived without a human father. Their journey mixes brutality with moments of unexpected tenderness and another disputed sign of prophecy.

Episode 19: Anamnesis

Catherine and Lara investigate a group of schoolgirls after one claims to experience religious visions. Belief, adolescence and social rivalry create an unstable mixture that becomes increasingly dangerous.

Episode 20: A Room with No View

Lucy Butler holds a gifted teenager captive and attempts to dismantle his sense of identity. The episode presents evil through patient psychological control rather than conventional physical violence.

Episode 21: Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me

Skully’s Pick

Four demons gather in a doughnut shop and exchange stories about their attempts to corrupt humanity. Funny, melancholy and distinctly odd, the episode suggests people often make evil’s job so easy that the demons barely need to leave a tip.

Episode 22: The Fourth Horseman

Frank investigates a deadly outbreak while discovering that the Millennium Group anticipated its arrival. As secrecy gives way to apparent preparation, he must decide whether the organisation intends to prevent catastrophe or survive it.

Episode 23: The Time Is Now

Skully’s Pick

The viral emergency spreads as Frank turns against the Group and searches for safety with Catherine and Jordan. Fragmented imagery, music and escalating dread transform the finale into the programme’s most audacious depiction of an approaching apocalypse.

Season 3 (1998-1999) – 22 Episodes

After the devastating events of the previous finale, Frank relocates to Virginia and works with the FBI alongside Agent Emma Hollis. The format returns partly to criminal investigation, but Frank’s determination to expose the Millennium Group keeps the conspiracy alive as the year 2000 draws closer.

Episode 1: The Innocents

Frank joins Emma Hollis to investigate an aircraft disaster connected to a dangerous contagion. The case provides clues about survivors with unusual abilities while establishing Frank’s hostile new relationship with the Group.

Episode 2: Exegesis

The investigation continues as Frank and Emma search for a woman linked to other psychically gifted individuals. The Millennium Group’s pursuit of the same targets suggests it is protecting knowledge it does not intend to share.

Episode 3: TEOTWAWKI

A school shooting leads Frank and Emma towards a heavily armed survivalist organisation preparing for social collapse. The title abbreviates “the end of the world as we know it”, which saves valuable time when apocalypse is already in the diary.

Episode 4: Closure

Emma’s pursuit of a remorseless killer reawakens memories of her sister’s murder. Her need for resolution threatens her objectivity and gives Frank an uncomfortable glimpse of how grief can direct an investigation.

Episode 5: …Thirteen Years Later

Murders occur on the set of a horror film based loosely upon one of Frank’s old cases. Members of Kiss appear amid the Halloween mayhem as the series briefly swaps apocalyptic solemnity for a knowingly excessive slasher story.

Episode 6: Skull and Bones

Skully’s Pick

Bodies discovered beneath a construction site appear to include people eliminated by the Millennium Group. Frank sees an opportunity to expose its crimes, while Peter Watts works to preserve the organisation and protect his own family.

Episode 7: Through a Glass, Darkly

The disappearance of a child draws suspicion towards a convicted offender recently released into the community. Frank and Emma must look beyond understandable fear when the obvious suspect may not be responsible.

Episode 8: Human Essence

Emma travels to Vancouver after her half-sister becomes entangled in a case involving a strange new drug. Reports that users are physically changing lead the investigation from narcotics into biological horror.

Episode 9: Omertà

Frank’s Christmas holiday with Jordan is interrupted by a wounded former gangster and two mysterious women possessing remarkable healing abilities. The gentler pace creates a melancholy fable about mercy, death and second chances.

Episode 10: Borrowed Time

Skully’s Pick

Jordan develops a dangerous fever as Frank notices a stranger appearing around people close to death. The episode turns a father’s terror into a thoughtful story about mortality and the limits of protection.

Episode 11: Collateral Damage

A former soldier abducts Peter’s daughter to force the Millennium Group to acknowledge what happened during a covert operation. Frank works with his former ally while confronting the human cost of the Group’s secrecy.

Episode 12: The Sound of Snow

Skully’s Pick

Audio recordings cause listeners to experience fatal hallucinations, taking Frank back to Seattle. His own exposure produces visions of Catherine and offers a painful opportunity to confront grief he has never fully processed.

Episode 13: Antipas

Lucy Butler resurfaces within the household of a district attorney and appears connected to a child’s disturbing behaviour. Frank’s attempt to expose her brings him face to face with the series’ most persistent embodiment of evil.

Episode 14: Matryoshka

The apparent suicide of a retired FBI agent uncovers a mystery dating back to the development of the atomic bomb. Frank and Emma peel away decades of official secrecy, with each revelation concealing another beneath it.

Episode 15: Forcing the End

A pregnant woman is abducted by a cult convinced that her child has a role in biblical prophecy. Frank and Emma race to find her before the group can impose its own violent interpretation of the future.

Episode 16: Saturn Dreaming of Mercury

The arrival of a new family coincides with disturbing changes in Jordan’s behaviour. Frank suspects that an apparently friendly child may be influencing her, but his protective instincts risk making him appear increasingly irrational.

Episode 17: Darwin’s Eye

Skully’s Pick

An escaped psychiatric patient takes a therapist hostage, although their relationship does not fit the expected pattern. Frank and Emma uncover a history of exploitation behind the woman’s violence in one of the season’s strongest character-led investigations.

Episode 18: Bardo Thodol

A terminally ill scientist becomes the focus of an investigation involving advanced biotechnology, Buddhist beliefs and the Millennium Group. Questions of consciousness and transition give the episode an unusually cerebral form of body horror.

Episode 19: Seven and One

Someone exploits Frank’s childhood fear of drowning through carefully staged intimidation. As colleagues question his stability, Frank must determine whether the threat is external or a construction of his own mind.

Episode 20: Nostalgia

Emma returns to her home town during the investigation of several murdered women. Familiar places and old relationships complicate a case exposing the violence concealed beneath comforting memories.

Episode 21: Via Dolorosa

Frank recognises the methods of an executed killer in a new series of murders. As he pursues a possible successor, Emma faces the deterioration of her father and receives an offer from the Millennium Group.

Episode 22: Goodbye to All That

Skully’s Pick

The search for the killer continues while Frank uncovers evidence of extreme neurological experimentation. Emma must choose between his warnings and the Group’s promises, leaving Frank to make a final decision about Jordan’s safety.

Fox cancelled Millennium after “Goodbye to All That”, so the episode functions as an improvised finale and leaves Peter Watts, Emma Hollis and the Millennium Group without full resolution.
