Episode 1: Pilot

Episode 2: Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go

Irisa intervenes when a Castithan man submits to a brutal punishment for cowardice, placing her at odds with one of the town’s most powerful families. Meanwhile, Nolan pursues the conspirator who sabotaged Defiance’s defences into the dangerous ruins beneath the town. The episode quickly demonstrates that surviving an attack is considerably easier than agreeing what justice should look like afterwards.

Episode 3: The Devil in the Dark

A series of Hellbug attacks leads Nolan and Irisa towards a crime rooted in Defiance’s troubled history. Sukar helps Irisa understand her mysterious visions, while an old injustice threatens to provoke fresh violence. The monster hunt is effective, but the episode’s real strength lies in showing how the new world has inherited all the land disputes of the old one—with added giant insects.

Episode 4: A Well Respected Man

Kenya and one of her employees are abducted by criminals harvesting human adrenaline for an illegal drug. Nolan launches a rescue while Stahma manoeuvres Datak towards greater political influence and the McCawleys discover something unsettling beneath their mine. The criminal plot keeps things moving, but Stahma quietly proves that a pleasant smile can be more dangerous than Nolan’s handgun.

Episode 5: The Serpent’s Egg

Nolan escorts prisoner Rynn out of town, accompanied by Amanda and a considerable amount of Defiance’s money. When bandits attack their land coach, enemies are forced into an uneasy alliance. Back home, Irisa confronts a figure from her traumatic childhood in an episode that gives her anger and spirituality equal weight.

Episode 6: Brothers in Arms

An old friend of Nolan’s arrives hunting a Castithan fugitive wanted by the Earth Republic. Conflicting accounts of the man’s past leave Nolan choosing between personal loyalty and the responsibilities of his new position. It is a familiar western dilemma, but the post-war setting gives every accusation an uncomfortable political edge.

Episode 7: Goodbye Blue Sky

Deadly debris known as Razor Rain falls over Defiance while Irisa searches for Sukar following a disturbing vision. Elsewhere, Stahma’s attempt to arrange some pre-wedding education for Alak takes an unexpected turn. Only Defiance could combine falling spacecraft, religious mystery and spectacularly ill-advised relationship management quite this efficiently.

Episode 8: I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times

An astronaut missing since before the arrival of the Votans emerges from an Arkfall and discovers that Earth has become almost unrecognisable. Nolan tries to help him understand the new world while questions gather around how he survived. This poignant culture-shock story pauses the larger conspiracy and lets the transformed planet speak for itself.

Episode 9: If I Ever Leave This World Alive

A disease affecting only humans spreads through Defiance, and suspicion quickly falls upon the town’s Irathient population. Nolan and Connor must cross an Earth Republic quarantine to obtain treatment while Amanda faces the political consequences at home. The episode handles fear, prejudice and opportunism well, because apparently even the end of the old world could not eradicate scapegoating.

Episode 10: The Bride Wore Black

Human remains discovered beneath Defiance reopen a murder case connected to the town’s founding families. Tommy takes charge of the investigation as preparations for Alak and Christie’s wedding expose further tensions between the Tarrs and McCawleys. It is part detective story, part family drama and part reminder that wedding seating plans are rarely improved by an unsolved killing.

Episode 11: Past Is Prologue

Nolan’s actions during a public election debate threaten Amanda’s campaign and allow Datak to turn the lawkeeper’s wartime past against him. As political pressure mounts, Doc Yewll investigates the disturbing connection between Irisa and a mysterious artefact. The episode brings Defiance’s personal and political histories together just as both are becoming impossible to contain.

Episode 1: The Opposite of Hallelujah

Nine months later, the Earth Republic controls Defiance and Niles Pottinger occupies the mayor’s office. Amanda manages the NeedWant, Stahma oversees the Tarr business and Nolan searches beyond the town for Irisa. The altered balance of power gives the returning series a harsher edge and makes Defiance feel occupied rather than merely governed.

Episode 2: In My Secret Life

Nolan and Irisa return just as a marketplace bombing places the town on high alert. Irisa’s attack on Earth Republic officer Berlin leaves Nolan with limited time to identify the bomber and restore both their freedom and reputation. The investigation is solid, although Irisa’s concealed behaviour supplies the episode’s more troubling mystery.

Episode 3: The Cord and the Ax

Irisa struggles to understand the violent incidents surrounding her, refusing to tell Nolan what she has been experiencing. Amanda’s dependence on adreno worsens, while Alak’s attempt to step away from the family business provokes a fierce response from Datak. Everyone appears to be hiding something, which in Defiance is less a warning sign than a standard Tuesday.

Episode 4: Beasts of Burden

Masked raiders attack an Earth Republic convoy, stealing mining equipment and humiliating Pottinger. Nolan’s investigation points towards Rafe and a group of disaffected miners, while Stahma challenges Datak’s authority within their home and business. The episode draws an effective line between resistance and revenge, then watches its characters repeatedly step across it.

Episode 6: This Woman’s Work

Pottinger recruits Nolan to salvage an energy source from a newly fallen Ark, where the surviving cargo proves extremely dangerous. In Defiance, Stahma faces opposition from Castithan traditionalists after assuming control of the family business. The two plots share an interest in survival through ruthlessness, although Stahma remains the only person who could make a social gathering feel like an organised military operation.

Episode 7: If You Could See Her Through My Eyes

The murder of a Tarr handmaiden leads Datak and Rafe towards a black market dealing in Votan eyes. Nolan and Irisa investigate the disappearance of Rynn, while Alak learns more about Christie’s visits to a Castithan club. It is gruesome, culturally revealing and particularly effective at forcing unlikely characters to work together.

Episode 8: Slouching Towards Bethlehem

The Earth Republic captures a Votanis Collective bomber, only for Amanda to receive an ultimatum involving someone she believed she had lost. Nolan attempts a dangerous deception during the resulting exchange as Irisa’s mysterious connection to other Votans intensifies. The episode pulls several separate storylines towards the season’s larger threat without sacrificing its emotional centre.

Episode 9: Painted from Memory

A familiar woman returns to Defiance with fragmented memories and an uncertain account of where she has been. Amanda desperately wants to believe what she sees, while Nolan, Pottinger, Doc Yewll and the Tarrs have very different reasons to investigate. Identity, grief and manipulation combine in one of the series’ most emotionally effective mysteries.

Episode 10: Bottom of the World

An explosion inside the mines kills an Earth Republic ambassador and traps Amanda with Pottinger. Nolan turns to Rafe for help with the rescue, but evidence suggests the disaster may have been deliberately engineered. The confined setting produces welcome tension while family loyalties make determining responsibility much harder than finding the exit.

Episode 11: Doll Parts

The murder of Deirdre Lamb places Alak under suspicion and exposes further fractures within his marriage. At the same time, Nolan and Tommy attempt to prevent Irisa from completing a dangerous ritual. What begins as a murder investigation becomes one of the season’s darkest episodes, with several characters discovering that good intentions offer remarkably poor protection.

Episode 12: All Things Must Pass

Nolan races to save Tommy while Pottinger confronts the Tarrs over their past actions. Doc Yewll emerges from hiding with a warning about Irisa and the growing Ark threat, and Pilar McCawley makes her presence felt. This penultimate chapter is heavy with consequences and gives almost everyone an opportunity to make matters appreciably worse.

Nolan and Irisa are released from their confinement by two mysterious newcomers, while Datak, Stahma and Rafe continue searching for their missing family. The town has endured invasions and political occupation, but unpaid bills and a failing energy supply may be its most relatable enemies yet.

Episode 2: The Last Unicorns

The search for the missing Tarr family ends in devastating violence as General Rahm Tak reveals his plans for Defiance. Back in town, Doc Yewll identifies the newly arrived aliens as Omec and reacts with unusual alarm. The episode announces that the final season will be considerably less forgiving than those before it.

Episode 3: Broken Bough

Nolan and Irisa scout Rahm Tak’s forces and uncover a weapon capable of breaching Defiance’s protective net. Their response exposes a growing disagreement over how far they should go to protect the town. Meanwhile, the Tarrs are forced into a dangerous arrangement and Stahma begins cultivating a relationship with T’evgin.

Episode 4: Dead Air

An attack leaves Defiance dangerously short of weapons, sending Nolan and Amanda in search of an old Earth Republic stockpile. Their discovery forces Amanda to confront an extremely painful part of her past, while Datak and Stahma receive new orders from Rahm Tak. This is a bleak and personal episode, handling Amanda’s trauma far more seriously than the programme’s pulpy exterior might suggest.

Episode 5: History Rhymes

Alien technology traps Nolan and Irisa inside a shared dream assembled from memories neither is eager to revisit. Amanda and Doc Yewll seek T’evgin’s help while Alak returns home carrying anger of his own. Episode 6: Where the Apples Fell

Nolan and Berlin pursue Datak and Stahma after their connection to the Votanis Collective becomes public. Alak must decide what kind of father—and what kind of Tarr—he intends to become. This is a bruising family episode in which loyalty proves flexible, forgiveness remains scarce and nobody considers sitting down for a calm chat.

Episode 7: The Beauty of Our Weapons

A visiting arms dealer with a history involving Berlin offers Defiance badly needed weapons. Nolan attempts to assemble a civilian militia, but convincing people to defend the town is harder when defeat appears likely. Irisa’s response supplies the emotional force, while the episode asks what a community is truly prepared to fight for.

Episode 8: My Name Is Datak Tarr and I Have Come to Kill You

Rahm Tak’s soldiers infiltrate Defiance, inflicting heavy losses and leaving the town’s defenders desperate for a decisive response. Doc Yewll devises a plan requiring Datak to enter the enemy camp with little expectation of returning. The result is tense, violent and unexpectedly moving—particularly for anyone who once regarded Datak as merely the galaxy’s worst dinner guest.

Episode 9: Ostinato in White

A predator begins hunting residents of Defiance as Nolan struggles beneath the weight of the recent attack. He and Irisa investigate the killings while Doc Yewll examines evidence pointing towards something outside their usual experience. The episode temporarily becomes an effective science-fiction horror story, complete with guilt, body horror and some deeply inadvisable Omec parenting.

Episode 10: When Twilight Dims the Sky Above

A Votanis Collective delegation arrives offering Defiance a possible peace agreement. Nolan’s increasingly unstable behaviour threatens the negotiations, while conflict between T’evgin and Kindzi places the Omec alliance under strain. Peace talks in Defiance rarely go smoothly, but even by local standards this meeting requires stronger refreshments.

Episode 11: Of a Demon in My View

Nolan’s journey to face trial is interrupted when Kindzi launches her own intervention. Amanda, Irisa and Berlin attempt to recover him as the struggle within the Omec family reaches an irreversible point. The episode shifts the season firmly towards its final threat and gives Kindzi’s hunger for power a terrifying new scale.

Episode 12: The Awakening

Omec forces descend upon Earth and begin gathering victims for the Dread Harvest. Nolan, Amanda and Irisa race to free prisoners and disrupt Kindzi’s plans, while the Tarr household comes under direct attack. Nearly every surviving character is pulled into the crisis, leaving the finale with an entire planet’s worth of trouble to resolve.

Episode 13: Upon the March We Fittest Die

Nolan leads Irisa, Datak and Doc Yewll aboard the Omec ship on a mission that may offer no route home. Below them, Defiance’s survivors fight to protect their town and the fragile society they have built together. The series ends with sacrifice, affection and a satisfying degree of closure—plus the comforting knowledge that Datak Tarr can somehow remain magnificently difficult even during a potential apocalypse.

Defiance was cancelled after its third season, but its final episode resolves the immediate conflict and gives its central characters meaningful destinations. Some corners of the world remain unexplored, yet the story feels concluded rather than simply abandoned. For a town built from wreckage, uneasy alliances and questionable decisions, that counts as a respectable victory.
