The second series is more confident, balancing its science-fiction cases with stronger character development and a warmer sense of the team as a dysfunctional family. The final television series expands Torchwood into an international BBC and Starz production. Humanity abruptly loses the ability to die, creating a global medical and political emergency while Jack experiences a disturbing reversal of his own immortality.

Episode 1: The New World

CIA agent Rex Matheson survives an injury that should have killed him on the same day that death stops occurring worldwide. His investigation brings him to Wales, where Gwen has withdrawn from Torchwood life but remains understandably prepared for trouble.

Jack and Gwen are transported to the United States while Rex’s injuries continue to defy medical expectations. An attempt on Jack’s life reveals that the immortal former Time Agent may now be the only mortal person on Earth.

Episode 3: Dead of Night

The reassembled team begins investigating PhiCorp, a pharmaceutical company positioned to profit enormously from an undying population. Meanwhile, convicted murderer Oswald Danes attracts a growing media following with the assistance of publicist Jilly Kitzinger.

Episode 4: Escape to L.A.

Torchwood follows PhiCorp’s digital operations to Los Angeles and encounters an assassin who knows more about the Miracle than expected. Rex also discovers that the conspiracy has reached deeply into the CIA.

Episode 5: The Categories of Life

The television series concludes here. The immediate Miracle Day storyline is resolved, but the final scenes deliberately establish another threat and leave the future of several characters open. Further Torchwood stories have continued in audio dramas and other media, but no fifth television season has been produced.
