War of the Worlds (2019) Episode Guide
Humanity receives proof of intelligent extra-terrestrial life and barely has time to celebrate before most of the population is wiped out. War of the Worlds understands that first contact is largely a matter of presentation, and annihilation tends to dampen the mood.
This guide covers all 24 episodes in release order across the programme’s three seasons. The episodes were not given individual titles, so they are listed using their official season numbering, with concise, spoiler-light summaries and selected Skully’s Picks.
The series develops considerably beyond its initial survival premise. Later episodes explore the identity of the invaders, their connection to humanity and increasingly complicated questions involving genetics, time and reality.
Before you press play: Skipping episodes is strongly discouraged. This is one continuous story, and even quiet character scenes can establish information needed much later. The introductions to Seasons 2 and 3 necessarily disclose the general direction of previous seasons, although major revelations have been avoided.
All three seasons have been released, and Season 3 was produced as the final chapter. The story therefore reaches a conclusion rather than disappearing into the television cancellation vortex.
Season 1 (2019) – 8 Episodes
A mysterious signal from another galaxy is followed by an attack that destroys civilisation within moments. Survivors in Britain and France emerge into an emptied world, where unfamiliar machines hunt the living and several apparently ordinary people display an inexplicable connection to the invaders.
Episode 1
Skully’s Pick
Astronomer Catherine Durand detects an intelligent signal from the Ross 128 system, while neuroscientist Bill Ward identifies an unusual magnetic pattern. When alien vessels arrive above major population centres, scattered individuals survive a devastating attack largely through circumstance rather than preparation.
Episode 2
The survivors emerge from underground shelters, submerged vehicles and enclosed metal spaces to discover that almost everyone around them is dead. Sarah struggles to protect her children in London, Jonathan begins travelling home from France, and Catherine’s military escort encounters the machines now stalking the landscape.
Episode 3
Skully’s Pick
Bill and Helen search for their son while examining one of the alien hunters at uncomfortably close range. Emily’s response to the invaders becomes harder to dismiss, and Catherine discovers that humanity’s first message may have attracted precisely the sort of attention nobody wanted.
Episode 4
Mokrani leads a mission to investigate the source of the alien transmissions as Bill searches for a practical weakness in the machines. Kariem and Ash make a disturbing discovery at the hospital, while similar experiences begin connecting Emily in London with Sacha in France.
Episode 5
Bill and Helen join Sarah’s group, bringing several strands of the British story together. Jonathan becomes increasingly concerned by Sacha’s behaviour, and Catherine’s team explores the wreckage of an alien vessel containing evidence that the enemy may not be entirely mechanical.
Episode 6
Emily’s strange influence over the quadrupedal hunters raises difficult questions about whether she represents protection or danger. Bill and Tom study the creatures at the university, while Sacha’s own connection to them becomes more pronounced.
Episode 7
Catherine is reunited with Sophia, whose journey through the ruined world has left her caring for a young survivor. Tensions between Jonathan and Sacha erupt, while Emily’s growing confidence in her relationship with the aliens places the London group at risk.
Episode 8
Skully’s Pick
Catherine tests her theory that the alien machines can be disrupted through their shared frequency. As the survivors face attacks in both France and Britain, Emily follows her connection to its source and enters an alien vessel seeking answers.
Season 2 (2021) – 8 Episodes
Months after the attack, organised resistance groups have begun fighting back. The discovery of humanoid invaders changes the nature of the conflict, while Bill searches for a biological weapon and Catherine investigates scientific work that could explain how the enemy crosses space and time.
Episode 1
Four months after the invasion, Bill studies the humanoid attackers and discovers that their deteriorating organs may provide a weapon against them. Emily returns from the alien ship with fragmented memories, while an injured dissident reaches Catherine’s observatory.
Episode 2
Skully’s Pick
Catherine defies military orders to question Micah, who possesses formulas concerning the movement of matter through space and time. In London, Emily is troubled by visions compelling her to attack Bill, whose examination of her DNA produces an alarming result.
Episode 3
Bill secretly uses Emily to test the biological weapon he has developed, crossing a line that divides the survivors around him. Catherine struggles with a painful loss but becomes determined to locate Bill and understand why Micah considered him so important.
Episode 4
Catherine, Sophia and Nathan begin the difficult journey to London alongside a survivor named Victor. Sacha’s fixation upon Emily becomes increasingly dangerous, while the consequences of Bill’s experiment force him away from the university group.
Episode 5
Bill falls in with a small military unit holding the young humanoid Isla captive. Catherine continues following his trail, Adina’s forces also close in on him, and Chloe finally recognises the full danger posed by Sacha.
Episode 6
Sophia watches recordings left by a dead survivor while Catherine studies algorithms that may reveal how the alien machines coordinate their behaviour. Bill intervenes when Isla is threatened, creating an opportunity for her to escape and return to her people.
Episode 7
Emily agrees to help Bill continue testing the virus, but its effects prove more dangerous than anticipated. Sacha follows the group and tries to separate her from the others, while Catherine resumes her search for the scientist upon whom so much now depends.
Episode 8
Skully’s Pick
The surviving human groups finally come together and prepare an attack that could alter the course of the invasion. Bill and Isla attempt to use the aliens’ own technology against them, placing humanity’s future in the hands of an extraordinarily risky journey.
Season 3 (2022) – 8 Episodes
The consequences of Bill’s actions have created an altered world in which the invasion did not unfold as before. Memories cross between realities, a black hole threatens Earth and the remaining humanoid invaders pursue a final plan that could destroy humanity in more than one timeline.
Episode 1
People around the world experience visions of lives they do not remember living. MI5 agent Zoe approaches the imprisoned Bill for an explanation, while Catherine detects unusual black-hole activity and begins investigating its connection to the disturbances.
Episode 2
Adina moves forward with a new plan as the surviving humanoid invaders adapt to a reality in which their history has been erased. Astronauts Richard and Juliet observe alarming phenomena from orbit, and evidence emerges that the danger extends beyond unexplained hallucinations.
Episode 3
Skully’s Pick
With Richard’s assistance, Catherine discovers that consciousness may be crossing between alternate worlds. Zoe takes drastic action to secure Bill’s help, while Martha learns something that forces her to reconsider her loyalties.
Episode 4
Tom confronts the consequences of a betrayal and encounters someone whose presence complicates the divide between humans and their future enemies. Catherine searches for a way to neutralise the black hole before its effects become irreversible.
Episode 5
A violent confrontation places several lives in immediate danger as the competing groups struggle for control. Elsewhere, Catherine and Sam seek help for his incapacitated parents, revealing the human cost of the disturbances spreading across the altered world.
Episode 6
Bill makes a discovery that could offer a way to defeat the remaining invaders, but putting it into practice proves far from simple. Conflict grows among the humanoids, and Catherine faces a decision that tests both her scientific judgement and her personal loyalties.
Episode 7
Adina’s plan approaches completion as the black hole’s effects intensify across both realities. The survivors race to assemble the science and equipment needed to intervene, while attacks in the altered world threaten to stop them before they can act.
Episode 8
Skully’s Pick
With Adina’s scheme underway, Bill undertakes one final mission to reach Catherine and coordinate an answer across two realities. The programme brings its intersecting stories together in an ambitious finale shaped by sacrifice, reconciliation and the possibility of breaking an inherited cycle of violence.
War of the Worlds concludes with Episode 8 of Season 3. Although its final hour leaves some characters facing uncertain personal futures, the central invasion story and the conflict spanning the two realities receive a definite resolution.
