The historical settings grow more adventurous, Jennifer becomes harder to dismiss, and Cole and Cassie discover that surviving the same crisis doesn’t necessarily mean learning the same lessons. There’s more humour, too, although the universe rarely lets anyone enjoy themselves for long.

There’s a tighter rhythm across these ten episodes, but still room for historical adventures, unexpected comedy and a particularly memorable change of perspective. Jennifer remains an excellent reminder that the person who sounds least sensible may be the only one asking the right question.

The search leads to a masked gathering in London in 1899, with Cole and Cassie facing pressure from more than one direction. The setting makes concealment literal, but the real tension comes from familiar people whose intentions are no longer easy to read.

The final season has two jobs: bring an increasingly elaborate time-travel story to a conclusion and make that conclusion matter to the people caught inside it. Its strongest moments come from treating those jobs as inseparable.

The journey remains adventurous, taking in unfamiliar centuries and some gloriously reckless plans. Underneath the spectacle, earlier conversations, objects and decisions begin demanding a second look. Details that once seemed incidental may have been doing rather more work than you realised.

This is the home stretch. Avoid skipping ahead through the descriptions, and save enough viewing time to watch the two-part finale together.

The Witness brings the conflict directly to Project Splinter, forcing Jones and the team into a desperate struggle for survival. Opening the final season with this title is suitably unsettling. There is little breathing room as familiar advantages begin disappearing.

Cassie follows Olivia’s history back to 1971, while Cole and Jennifer investigate another elusive clue. The central tension is uncomfortable: how should someone be treated before they become the person you know? Revenge and prevention are not necessarily the same thing.

A clue takes the team to the American frontier in 1852, where the search for a weapon encounters some distinctly out-of-place developments. The Western setting supplies the adventure, while questions about invention, responsibility and family give the episode its substance.
