Overview:

Stargate Universe is a dark and gritty departure from the previous Stargate series, as it explores the psychological toll that being stranded in deep space can take on its characters. The show also delves into more existential and philosophical themes than its predecessors, such as destiny, free will, and the nature of the universe itself.

The series begins with a group of military and civilian personnel being stranded on the ancient spaceship Destiny, which was launched by an advanced alien race millions of years ago. The ship is on a pre-programmed course to explore the universe, but the crew soon discovers that Destiny is not simply a vessel for exploration, but rather a tool for an unknown purpose.

As the crew struggles to survive on the ship, tensions rise between the military and civilian factions, and personal secrets and relationships are exposed. The characters face numerous challenges and threats, including alien encounters, sabotage, and the constant danger of the ship’s systems failing.

Throughout the series, the crew uncovers many of Destiny’s secrets and learns that their mission is not just about survival, but about finding the truth behind the ship’s existence. They also encounter other intelligent lifeforms, some of which are friendly and others who are hostile, leading to tense and dangerous situations.

Review:

One of the most intriguing characters in the series is Dr Rush, whose motives and loyalty are often called into question. He is a brilliant scientist with a hidden agenda, and many of the crew members are wary of him. Despite this, he is often the key to solving problems and unlocking the mysteries of the ship.

Another standout character is Eli, who is initially portrayed as a slacker and social outcast but proves to be a crucial member of the crew. He brings a much-needed sense of humor to the show, but also grows and matures throughout the series and becomes a leader in his own right.

The show ended after two seasons, leaving many plotlines unresolved and causing frustration among fans. However, the series remains a cult favourite among sci-fi fans, who appreciate its darker tone and complex characters. Despite its relatively short run, Stargate Universe remains a compelling and thought-provoking entry in the Stargate franchise.
