Overview:
Blakes 7 is a classic science fiction series that originally ran from 1978 to 1981 and has since become a cult favorite among fans of the genre. Created by Terry Nation, best known for his work on Doctor Who, the show has been noted for its dark and gritty tone, complex characters, and intricate plotting.

The series takes place in a dystopian future, where the galaxy is ruled by the Terran Federation, a totalitarian government that seeks to exert total control over its citizens. This is the backdrop against which the main character, Roj Blake, begins his journey. A former resistance leader, Blake is arrested and transported to a penal colony but manages to escape with the help of a group of fellow prisoners. Together, they steal an alien spacecraft known as the Liberator and become outlaws, vowing to bring down the Federation and restore freedom to the galaxy.

The show’s main cast is composed of a diverse group of characters, each with their own unique motivations and personalities. There is Jenna Stannis, a skilled pilot who becomes Blake’s second-in-command; Vila Restal, a cowardly thief who is nonetheless a valuable member of the team; and Olag Gan, a gentle giant who possesses incredible strength. Joining them later in the series are Dayna Mellanby, a weapons expert seeking revenge for the death of her father, and Del Tarrant, a former Federation officer who defects to the rebellion.

Perhaps the most memorable character, however, is Kerr Avon, played by Paul Darrow. A cold and pragmatic computer expert, Avon is initially distrustful of Blake and his mission but gradually becomes more involved in the struggle against the Federation. Avon’s complex relationship with Blake, as well as his ongoing battle of wits with the power-hungry Servalan, is one of the show’s highlights.

Blakes 7 is known for its willingness to take risks and challenge its audience. Many of the episodes are morally ambiguous, with characters forced to make difficult choices that have significant consequences. The series also featured several shocking plot twists, including the death of several main characters and the revelation that, in a cruel twist of fate, Blake’s rebellion was actually funded by the Federation itself.

Despite its dark tone, Blakes 7 also had a sense of humor, courtesy of its sarcastic and often bickering crew. The show’s use of cutting-edge special effects and its atmospheric soundtrack also set it apart from other science fiction shows of its time.

In conclusion, Blakes 7 is a classic sci-fi series that still captures the imagination of its viewers today. With its complex characters, elaborate storyline, and daring themes, it is a must-watch for any fan of the genre.
